Weight Training

For grade(s) 9-12.

Subject & Standards

Physical Education:

Understandings & Goals

Enduring Understanding: Students should understand how preparation, training and fitness relate to and affect performance; how to design and carry out activity and training programmes that have specific purposes; the importance of exercise and activity to personal, social and mental health and well-being; how to monitor and develop their own training, exercise and activity programmes in and out of school. Goal(s): Perform with good technique a range of weight-training exercises, showing understanding of safety issues and of the muscle groups involved. Plan, perform and monitor a personal weight-training programme over a period of 4 to 6 weeks, showing understanding of the principles of training. Understand the short-term effects and long-term health benefits of weight-training. Understand factors affecting participation and know where they can participate in weight-training in the community.

Questions Answered

Essential questions:1) How do I plan, perform, monitor and evaluate a safe and effective health-related exercise programme that would meet my personal needs and preferences over an extended period of time? 2) How can I demonstrate a practical understanding of the key principles of exercise programming and training? 3) How can I overcome the constraints of being inactive? 4) Where can I gain access to activity opportunities both in school and in the local community? 5) What are some of the exercise effects, health benefits and safety issues associated with their selected activities? 6) What are some of the risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle and with excessive forms and amounts of exercise? Objectives: Students should be able to perform with good technique a range of weight-training exercises and understand safety issues associated with using weights. Students should be able to understand the short-term effects and long-term benefits of weight-training and factors affecting participation. Students should be able to design, carry out, monitor and develop a personal weight-training programme, demonstrating practical understanding of the principles of training. Students should take responsibility for their own safe, effective and relevant preparation for and recovery from weight-training.

Assessment

What quiz and test items (e.g. simple content-focused questions that require a single, best answer) will provide evidence of understanding? Students will be assessed with both test and quizzes on factual information, concepts and skills. They will be easily scored and two will be secure. What academic prompts (e.g. open-ended questions or problems that require students to think critically and then to prepare a response / product / performance) will provide evidence of understanding? What safety issues associated with weight-training? (eg. minimise stress on the back, select appropriate levels of exercises, work at your own pace, avoid competition with others, control the lifting and lowering of weights, alternate muscle groups, check the position of pins) What performance tasks and projects (e.g. complex challenges that are authentic, mirror the real world and require a performance or product) will you include that will provide evidence of student understanding?  Posters, charts, prompt sheets, task cards, a weight training demonstration video using I-movie What other (e.g. observations, work samples, dialogues, student self-assessment) of understanding will you collect?  Posters, charts, prompt sheets, task cards, CD-ROM, a video made using I-movie, notices, brochures, leaflets, directory, record cards, diaries.

Instructional Strategies

Inquiry-based…Progress charts: Students can monitor their progress on charts, recording information on fitness and physical activity. For example, students may develop individual progress charts on skill development. They can report on their improvement and the things they need to work on. Contracts:These are formally signed agreements between the teacher and student which show what work is to be done by the student by a specified date. Inquiry-based…Diary or journal:These can be written or taped or be an oral reflection on a particular issue or focus area. In this situation students are encouraged to provide personal reflections rather than simple descriptions. Students will have the opportunity to record their results privately and write about any feelings or comments they may have. Project-based…Portfolio:This may be a collection of items relating to fitness and physical activity. It may include such items as a gym program, details of participation in local sporting clubs or dance groups,a personal activity diary, evidence of encouraging others to participate e.g.coaching a junior team or playing with younger siblings. Project-based…Video: This will be a short video using I-movie in which the student will demonstrate their ability to perform a variety of weight training exercises using proper technique and demonstrating understanding of safety issues.
