Subject & Standards
3. Students engage in the writing process.: 6. Students understand and use principles of language:Needs Assessment/Rational
As the year begins and assignments, class discussions, journals, and homework are started you can see the needs of kids. English is a hard subject area for kids. The concepts are to big for the little brains but if it brought down to there level and taught in an interactive way many of needs are met.
For a teacher the joys of hearing “oh - that is how you do it” or “I get it” is wonderful. I was not hearing or seeing this and know something needed to be done.

Understandings & Goals
I want my students too be aware of different writing styles and the needs in writing whether it is a capital letter, punctuation mark, or the right word. Since fourth grade opens the door to many things I also want them to have the remembrance of the topics and think back and say “I have done that” or “I have heard that before”.
Writing is a life skill and kids need to know how to do it.

Instructional Strategies
Many lessons are inquiry based. The students find the answer. Through examples, they learned ways to find the answer and tips and tricks that made English easier.
There were also self-directed lessons in the sense that everyone has there own style. Using the rules we learned brought out individual styles of writing in the students. Learning the rules also made the writing process not such a struggle.
Cooperative groups and/or partners were used in areas. Working with others allows for discussion that promotes question and answers at different levels. Higher order thinking happens without the students worrying about anything or the teacher trying to pull it from kids.
