El Libro de mi Familia (My Family Book)

For grade(s) 10.

Students will create a family photo album with descriptions of their family members written in Spanish.

Subject & Standards

Foreign Language:

Needs Assessment/Rational

Needs Assessment Rational: 1. Students will work individually to describe family members using present, preterite and imperfect verb forms.  2. They will be sharing their information in written and oral assessments.  Each will have the freedom to express individual thoughts and feelings in their writing.

Understandings & Goals

Enduring Understandings: 1. I want the students to understand how and when to use the preterite and imperfect verb tenses and become more comfortable with their writing and speaking skills.  2. I also want them to learn more about their families and share the information with others by looking into their pasts.  This will help them to achieve two goals: 1. To identify the uses of the preterite and imperfect verb tenses and 2. To learn more about themselves.

Questions Answered

Essential Questions: 1. What activities did you enjoy when you were younger? 2. What was significant about certain family members? 3. What are some of your favorite memories as a child? 4. As you have grown older, how have you changed as a person? 5. Who are some of the most important family members in your life? 6. Why are they important to you?
Objectives: 1.  Students will use the preterite and imperfect verb tenses to talk about their past. 2.  Students will share their project verbally with the class. 3.  Students will note how they have changed since their childhood. 4.  Students will note the importance of each person’s individuality. 5.  Students will understand the importance of their role and the roles of others in their family.

Assessment

Multiple Assessments: 1. Students will work together with their families to write about themselves and other family members.  2. They will use this information to discuss how they have changed as they have grown.

Instructional Strategies

Strategies: 1. In working with a skill that students will begin to use on a daily basis, an introductory project will enable them to work at their own pace to achieve the desired outcome.  2. Each student will be able show their individuality as they write and speak of their pasts.  3. They will use and become more familiar with the two new verb tenses that have been introduced.  4. They will be developing a foundation that will enable them to continue learning a foreign language.
